This is drawn by French Romantic artist Theodore Gericault, using the severed heads of torture victims as models. France in the early 19th Century was still pretty grim. Gericault himself was quite the odd one - known to keep body parts in his apartment for months, to study them as they rotted, to aid in his artistic work. Yuck !  A perfect image for Halloween.
